Ceramics grow with advanced tech
With superior quality products and competitive pricing, the country’s ceramic industry is fast becoming a booming sector.
It was not long ago that foreign ceramic products like floor tiles, table wares, basins and commodes used to dominate the local market.
However, things have changed for the better in the recent years as a good number of local manufacturers have successfully penetrated the market with high quality products.
According to a competent source, there are more than 60 ceramic industries in the country while another 20 will hit the market by June 2018.
The local companies such as RAK Ceramics ltd, Akij Ceramics, Fu-Wang, AG, Great Wall, Mir, Hiawatha, DBL, Star, Mirpur ceramics and others are the prominent manufacturers in the country.
These industries mainly produce tiles, tableware and sanitary ware.
Following the source of Bangladesh Ceramics Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA), the industry has experienced 200 per cent growth in production in the last five years.
The yearly production capacity of the local ceramics industries is as follows: tableware (250 million pieces), tiles (120 million square meters) and sanitary ware (7.5 million pieces).
More than 500,000 people are engaged in the local ceramics industries. The manufacturing companies have also strengthened their position in the global market by after meeting the national demands.
A statistics of BCMEA shows, the industry earns more than USD 42 million through export. Of the different ceramic products, tableware is exported to more than 50 countries including the US, Canada, European Union, Australia; tiles to India, Nepal and Bhutan; and sanitary ware to the Middle East, especially to the UAE. Tableware accounts for more than 90 percent of Bangladesh’s ceramics export.
The countrywide showrooms and ceramics stores are keeping both local and foreign ceramic products on display for sale. Many new shops have come up in Uttara, Banglamotor, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Jatrabari and Keraniganj area.
During a spot visit in Banglamotor area of the capital, it was seen that more than 650 stores sell ceramic products of both local and foreign origin. Traders mainly import products from China, Spain, Indonesia, Malaysia and India.
Kawshik Amit, manager of Marketing Corporation Ltd, one of the shops at Banglamotor said, “There was a time when the buyers used to look for foreign products. But now the trend is changing fast. Many buyers ask for local products of good quality available at affordable price.”
Around 50 agents/distributors of foreign companies are offering tiles, sanitary wares and table wares there. Among them, china based companies such as Venezia ceramics, Ming Dynasty, Zhu Di, Shanghai ceramics, Winto, Itto and Marshall are the prominent names.
Gobinda Lal Ghosh, head of sales & marketing of China-Bangla Ceramic Industry Ltd said, “Our Company is the first Bangladeshi company that started importing and manufacturing china products as a partnership business. But now we are manufacturing these products here in the country. But there are some challenges we are facing such as inadequate natural gas supply, skilled manpower and a few other problems”, he added.
“Our local products are now doing better than before. If the challenges can be overcome, our products will hit the international markets soon,” Gobinda Lal expects.
When contacted, Shirajul Islam Mollah MP, President of BCMEA, said, “The government has assured us of resolving the crisis by June or July this year when liquefied natural gas (LNG) will come into operation. It will reduce the burden on the natural gas reserve and productive sectors. The ceramics industries particularly will receive the supply of grid-gas”, he added.
