Dholaikhal losing lustre as car parts supplier

Dholaikhal, a large cauldron of scrap motor vehicles and parts in the old part of Dhaka city, is reportedly losing its character of mechanical healing.
Allegations are now that the place, where the mechanical cure was readily available, is supplying poor and faulty vehicle parts and accessories.
Some 5000 plus shops, run by self-taught craftsmen and unorthodox entrepreneurs, have made Dholaikhal as the country’s largest second hand parts  of motor bikes and cars. More than 50,000 people are employed there. But their reputation has been questioned for supplying low quality reconditioned machineries.
While visiting the spot, this correspondent has noticed that almost all shops are heavily dependent on reconditioned tools. The motor cars’ accessories thare are available at Dholaikhal are motor engine parts, piston ring, steering, dynamore, motor socket, shelf, looking glass, hemi, gear box,  bearings, socket jumper and many other items are sold here.
They are allegedly engaged in supplying motor parts without ensuring their quality.  As a hub for old machineries the shop owners collect their products from old and damaged vehicles and import some from abroad. There are four main available clusters such as bearings, engine parts, body parts and tools, which are more than 1000 in number.
Jitu Rahaman, a 19-year-old worker at Bhuiyan enterprise was seen refining car engine in front of the store. When asked he said, “The engine has been imported from Japan few days ago. After completing refining work, it will be packeted for sale.”
Sometimes, such products are supplied quickly as per the demand of customers, he added.
Hashem bhuiyan, owner of Bhuyian enterprise, said, “Majority of the vehicles’ body and parts we have  are imported from foreign countries. We have links with Chittagong-based traders, who manage to bring in machineries from abroad.”
There are many important parts of Volvo transports are available in his store.
“We buy an engine car at Tk40,000-50,000 and sell it at Tk 60,000-70,000,” he added. Besides, Toyota 1nz recondition engine worth Tk 60,000 Nissan cr14engine at Tk 55,000, Honda Accord: k24a (2wd) engine 1, 70,000 are available at Dholaikhal.
Shamim Ahmed, who came from Savar to buy parts for his car said,” There will be a slim possibility of getting old modeled parts after a few years. So, I have to depend on reconditioned machineries”.
Some of the buyers alleged that the reconditioned tools do not last long because of faults. The buyers said they have to buy another one in few months.
Md Abdur Razzak of Akbar Motors blamed poor road condition of the country for low durability. He said the machineries cannot last long because of decayed roads and ignorance of drivers. “We try to provide best quality goods,” he said.
