Expansion of Jurain road gathers pace
To accelerate the country’s road transport and communications development, work on expansion of roads in Jurain, Kuchiamura, Srinagar and Atadi areas has been coming on fine.
Sources said expansion of road in the capital’s Jurain-Postagola area began a few months ago.
During a spot visit, this correspondent found an initiative to evict illegal habitants and tear down shops and kitchen markets in Jurain area.
Besides, all unauthorised installments and hawker markets on both two sides of Dhaka-Narayanganj railway in Jurain area will be started soon.
It was learnt that a project has been taken under the government’s road transport and bridges ministry for the development of highways.
The project titled ‘Development project from Dhaka-Khulna (N-8) Jatrabari interceptor highway, including Ekuria-Babubazar link road, to Mawa and four-lane development project with separate lanes for slowdown vehicles in Pacchar-Bhanga part.
Roads and highway department and special works organisation (SWO) of Bangladesh Army are jointly implementing the work. The project cost is estimated worth Tk 6,252.29 crore.
It will cover 55-kilometre highway—31.7 kilometres from Jatrabari to Mawa, 3.30-kilometre link road from Ekuria to Babubazar and 20 kilometres from Pacchar of Shariatpur to Bhanga of Faridpur—will be developed.
The current two-lane highway will have four lanes. There will be a five-metre wide separate service lane and five-metre median on both sides.

It will cover 55-kilometre highway—31.7 kilometres from Jatrabari to Mawa, 3.30-kilometre link road from Ekuria to Babubazar and 20 kilometres from Pacchar of Shariatpur to Bhanga of Faridpur—will be developed.
The current two-lane highway will have four lanes. There will be a five-metre wide separate service lane and five-metre median on both sides.
In future, there is a plan to construct a metro rail using this medium. The 24.88 hectares of land acquisition for the project is under way.
There will have 31 bridges on the highway. Of them, 20 bridges of PC girders and rest 11 are RCC-made bridges.
Dhaleshwari-1 (58.05 metres), Dhaleshwari-2 (382.05 metres) and Arialkhan (450.05 metres) will be built as big bridges.
Forty-five culverts, six flyovers, four railway overpasses, 15 underpasses and three interchanges will be built. Two toll plazas will be set on the highway.
Six flyovers will be built in Abdullahpur, Hasara, Srinagar, Kadamtali, Pulia Bazar and Sadarpur. Jurain, Kuchiamora, Srinagar and Atadi will have four overpasses.
The three interchanges will be at Jatrabari, Teghria and Bhanga while there will have 15 underpasses.
The project work is divided into two packages. The first package is about 35 kilometres from Jatrabari to Mawa and the second from Pachhar to Bhanga up to 20-kilometre highway.
Nazrul Islam, secretary of road transport and bridges division), said the highway can be used after Padma Bridge opens. It will be the country’s first expressway.
“We expect that the project can be finished up to the fixed time by 2019,” he added.
Road Transport and Construction Minister Obaidul Quader inaugurated the development work of Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Highway on November 17, 2016.
While inaugurating, he said, “Work on the construction of Padma Bridge and expressway will be completed at the same time. As there will be no traffic signal on the highway, vehicles will move fast.”
