Rough state of Farmgate Park

The Farmgate Park is virtually off-limits to most of the city dwellers as it remains under the reign of grabbers, muggers and drug addicts for long.
Children, in particular, are being deprived of opportunities to play outside.
Many people attributed the problem to the negligence of the authorities concerned.
Located at the middle of Khamarbari and Indira Gandhi road, it is a lone open place for the nearby residents. But the environment of the park has worsened as the authorities are turning blind eye to tackling anti-social activities inside the park.
While visiting the park, this correspondent found huge amount of foul-smelling waste and garbage lying there.  The park’s boundary walls are also in ruins. Several concrete-made seats get damaged. Plastic bottles and other materials collected from city corporation dustbins are loaded in a storeroom inside the park.
The floating people leave excreta at will, although there is a public toilet inside the park. Trees are also being cut down as well by a group of influential.

People are found to be sitted on the ground of the park as some of the seat are damaged
In addition, some people have settled there after illegally occupying land on the western side of the park.
Meanwhile, the whole park goes under the grip of floating sex workers and brokers at night. They run their activities till late night. The common people are also harassed by junkies.
Shariful Islam, who came for morning walk in the park said, “The Park was not in this shape three or four years ago. Such a state has come about in absence of proper monitoring by the authorities concerned.”
The whole park has turned into car parking zone at present.
In addition, allegations run rife that ‘Kutubbagh Darbar Sharif’ arranges annual Urs every year inside the park. As a result, the atmosphere of the park gets ruined.
However, under the jurisdiction of Dhaka North City Corporation, the Public Works Department is responsible to oversee the park.
Sources said PWD has failed to maintain the good environment at Farmgate Park as squatters continue to live and sex workers run their business.
They have conducted several drives to evict them all, but to no avail, as a section of local influential provides full support to the unlawful, PWD sources alleged.
