Neonatal heart diseases up
Heart-related diseases among newborns are alarmingly increasing in the country.
Congenital heart disease, which affects a child during heart-start to proceed in mother’s womb, is leading to premature deaths overwhelmingly.
Sources say, most of the affected infants die prematurely because of not having proper medical facilities in the hospitals of the country.
National Heart Foundation sources say more than three lakh children are affected with heart-related diseases, especially congenital heart disease in the country. In addition, around 25 to 30 thousand are being newly affected every year.
In this context, around 2 lakh 30 thousand children are growing with heart diseases. Most of them die before or after surgery.
Experts are of the opinion, babies whose mothers have pregnancy diabetes, malnutrition and anemia are more likely to be infected with heart disease.
Illiteracy, poverty, health unawareness, taking unnecessary medicines, not taking care during pregnancy, eating habits of pregnant mothers are remarkable reasons for a child being affected in the mother’s womb.
Around 10 percent premature deaths occur as many children die annually in Bangladesh.
Talking to Bangladesh Post, Prof Dr Asit Baran Adhikary, chairman of the Cardiac Surgery department at BSMMU, said, “At the age of 20 days of an embryo in the mother’s womb, the heart starts to proceed, and heart diseases begin for various complexities from this stage, to the next three months. Most of these embryos die in the womb, the rest of them are born with heart disease.”
“Drugs such as retinoic acid for acne, chemicals, alcohol, and infections (such as rubella) during pregnancy can contribute to some congenital heart problems.
”Besides, poorly-controlled blood sugar in women who have diabetes during pregnancy has also been linked to a high rate of congenital heart defects.” “Some congenital heart defects in children are simple and don't need treatment. Other congenital heart defects in children are more complex and may require several surgeries performed over a period of several years,” he added.
It is learnt from BSMMU source that, they have treated around 3500 to 4000 heart disease child patients in the last five years in the Paediatric Cardiac Surgery department, while 1000 plus patients got admitted. 10 to 12 children are being treated here per day on an average.
Despite congenital heart diseases causing a massive death toll, there is scarcity of treatment as well as doctors and specialized hospitals both at the district and tertiary levels in the country.
Though some hospitals like National Institution of Cardiovascular Disease, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, National Heart Foundation, Dhaka Shishu hospital, Combined Military Hospital and Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital are providing treatment for child heart diseases, these are not enough in comparison to the large number of children with heart diseases.
Cardiac Society sources say, there are 383 registered heart specialists and doctors in the country. But there are only 20 Cardiologists and 11 Cardiac Surgeons for child heart disease treatment. Even there is no separate cardiac Cath Lab.
When contacted, Dr Kazi Abul Hassan, assistant professor at the National Institution of Cardiovascular Diseases said, “Though we have achieved satisfactory success in cardiovascular disease treatment, we are still backward in treating child heart-related diseases.”
“The number of heart patients is highly increasing nowadays, which is really difficult to treat for the low number of doctors. If more specialized hospitals and research institutions can be established at the district and territory levels, such type of diseases might be tackled.”
“Proper medical knowledge and awareness of pregnant mothers can contribute a lot in reducing congenital heart disease”, he suggested.
